Thanks Ted, good information. I know that TR's also switched from having the ring gear on the front of the flywheel to having it on the back. I know the early TR-2/3 starters pushed into the ring gear from the front, while the later (somewhere around 50,000 VIN) pulled in from the rear of the flywheel. Thus, I believe the ring gear was on the side of the flywheel from which the starter pinion gear engaged. I didn't realize they changed the number of teeth on the pinion gear, but I guess it would make sense that this change would have occurred when they switched starters and flywheels (again, around VIN 50,000). Is this correct?

Sorry to be late on this. Since we were one of the originators of this product we are very familiar with it. The Denso based gear reduction starter disengages from the ring gear when the engine starts, unlike the original Lucas starter which disengages when the engine "fires". Because of this, the starter pinion needs to engage 40 - 60% of the ring gear, not the entire ring gear. If entire ring gear is engage, it is possible for the starter not to disengage and be spun at engine speed. This will trash the starter. Our units are ring gear and flywheel specific. Example, there are 2 different TR3 ring gears. They differ by one tooth so a TR3 that used an original 9 tooth pinion gear starter (early car) cannot use the starter for the later TR3 or TR4 that had a 10 tooth pinion gear. Ted

Thanks to all for your help.
Update: I have pulled starter and bench tested it and it looks like it is working correctly. The pinion gear is moving out and spinning.
Inspection of pinion gear shows contact pattern at less than 50%. Inspection of ring gear shows same patters. It looks like the pinion gear is not coming out far enough or failing to mesh with ring gear.
Has anyone seen this?

Hi,
there are several gear types on the flywheel and the gear on the starter needs to match.
There are pull push types, or push pull types, the engage flange need to fit and also the teeth distance and such stuff.
Besides that, those starters are quite reliable.
Cheers
Chris

Friends
Has anyone had a problem with the Wosp gear reduction starter? I installed one on a new engine and after 15/20 starts, the starter spins but does not engage the ring gear. Battery voltage is 12.60, engine is properly grounded, all cables, solenoid and wiring are new.
Any recommendations on a gear reduction starter?
Thanks
