[Fot] Fwd: Starter

Sorry to be late on this. Since we were one of the originators of this
product we are very familiar with it. The Denso based gear reduction
starter disengages from the ring gear when the engine starts, unlike the
original Lucas starter which disengages when the engine "fires".
Because of this, the starter pinion needs to engage 40 - 60% of the ring
gear, not the entire ring gear.  If entire ring gear is engage, it is
possible for the starter not to disengage and be spun at engine speed.
This will trash the starter.  Our units are ring gear and flywheel
specific. Example, there are 2 different TR3 ring  gears. They differ by
one tooth so a TR3 that used an original 9 tooth pinion gear starter
(early car) cannot use the starter for the later TR3 or TR4 that had a
10 tooth pinion gear.  Ted
