I'm no expert, but IMHO getting the right additive package is more important
than the right 'weight'.  If 20W40 was originally recommended, then I
believe that either 10W40 or 20W50 would do fine.

That said, the second number is more important, because that's where the oil
will operate most of the time.  The first number, in effect, only comes into
play at cold start.
