[Fot] Oil Question - No LBC content

I apologize for using the list for a non-Triumph question but I know  there 
is more knowledge available here than anywhere else I could turn to.
 I have several older motorcycles whose manufacturers recommended oil  
weights that I can no longer find. Example; My "85 Virago 700 should have 20W-40  
according to Yamaha. I can get 10W-40 or 20W-50. Which number is more  
important, the first or the second. 
 I know from past discussions there are some lubrication experts on  the list 
and would greatly appreciate your advice.
