Collapsing steering column was nice change for safety considerations as well.
Modern airbags though offer another level of safety.

  I think the early flat
dash, low windshield models usually sell for more
because they are rarer.  The
late model ones are safer to drive because of
the dual brake system and much
better roll over protection and head rests.
But then compared to modern cars,
they are all just rolling coffins.
