If you didn't clean the rubber you need to do that. There's typically a
mold release agent on it that's designed to keep it from sticking to
anything. Others may offer opinions, but I'd start with 91% or higher
isopropyl alcohol on a clean cloth. If that doesn't help you might try
acetone, naphtha or lacquer thiner, but I'd try these on an isolated spot
first to make sure they don't desolve the rubber. Clean the metal surfaces,
too.
I've found that most of these adhesives work best with careful, light
applications of the goop on both the metal and the rubber, letting the
stuff get tacky, then adding another light application to one surface or
the other and then holding the seal in place with something like painters
tape for an hour or so while the adhesive bonds. Don't use duct or gaffers
tape. Either are likely to pull the seal loose when you pull the tape off.
Can't hurt to call Dean, either.
