The wire you describe sounds like the connection to the ballast resistor.
Internally, it should connect to the distributor points, NOT ground.

The vacuum advance connection MUST connect to the PORTED vacuum source 
on the SU carb.
The port in question is at the base of the carb body and usually only 
one carb has it fitted.
