[Roadsters] Speedometer installation

Since we are on the speedometer topic, I have a 67' 1600 I picked up and the speedo is not working. I removed the cable from the back of the speedo and it is not moving. I then crawled under the car to remove and then re-attach the cable to the tranny. There is a nub on the cable that seems to fit in a groove in the end of the speedo gear in/on the tranny and I made sure it fit well. The cable is still NOT moving. Could the cable be broken inside? Or is it possibly the driven gear in the tranny itself? There seems to be quite a bit of grease on the tranny end of the cable.
  Thanks for any help.

         JK 67' 1600
