Only the benighted in California would regard
these as "VIN" numbers.  To the rest of the US,
they are serial numbers.  My registration card
for my '84 Audi says, in proper terms, SERIAL NUMBER.

The late Steve Laifman and I argued this point
for years but, then, he lived in California and,
to those who live on the Left Coast, everything revolves around them.

Sorry, Jay.  I did like your Dad and I miss his peppery personality.
