Can't say for sure when the regionals really started. However our club
hosted a regional in 1984 at Road Atlanta in conjunction with a SVRA
event. I chaired that one and tried to do most of it myself. That was a
big a** mistake! However we had such a good time, we did it again in
1985 except that we did it with a committee. In 1986 the SE regional
moved to FL and has been there since, except for the 1990 regional we
held in Savannah.
The regional is a great 'test' the waters for hosting a national. Plus
Bill Sohl, then President of the VTR, said we had to host some regionals
before we could be considered for a national. So we got over that
hurdle.
