Bravo, Tom!
I've been avoiding commenting on this discussion till now, but I have to
second this comment. My 1600 Alfa often gets put into VSCCA races where
I'm way faster than lots of cars and I'm running SCCA vintage against
911s and Corvettes.
Faster cars can easily make passing their opportunities, and it's rarely
in the corners. If you are really faster, you want the cars you are
passing to follow a predictable line and you can easily find a way
around. It's the driver that thinks that he's doing you a favor by
moving over to give you the "fast line" that scares me! If I'm all that
fast, I will get around soon enough - and more safely - if you just keep
on truckin'.
When I'm dicing with someone of nearly equal speed, it's more difficult
to generalize, but 9 times out of 10, a pass is on a bluff. The 10th
time, it's capitalizing on a mistake, like the Mini I passed at NHIS two
weeks ago while admiring his belly pan!

All generalizations, with the possible exception of this one, are false!
