We have a vintage tractor race on Sunday at lunch time. It is a handicap race with the tractors qualifying on Sat. with their best time in road gear over a measured distance. For the race the tractors are spaced around the track with the fastest having to go almost a whole lap to the finish. Some of them are so slow that they are literally within sight of the finish. One year a guy with an old lawn tractor pulling a gang of reel mowers would have won, but the judges decided that he had missed a spot of high grass just short of the finish. By the time he went back and got it, several other "real" tractors had crossed the line. The fastest is usually an Oliver row crop with a hemi V-8. He reportedly can do over sixty in a straight line. He rarely can go that fast because it gets rather unstable with the row crop front wheels. So don't worry about getting of the vitage race topics. JW |
