Not too long ago--early 80's I think-- a vw beetle ex racer entered the
enduro in Portland. Enduro rules state that if you have car trouble and
can make it to the pits your crew--or anybody--can work on your car.
But if the car breaks down on the track and you can get it to a safe
place, the driver can work on it but no one else. Your crew can hand you
tools or parts over the fence but cannot cross onto the track area.
Well, the vw,running fairly well as I remember, had some major engine
trouble, coasted off the track onto the grass near turn 4, close to the
fence and an access road. His crew drove the driver's wife's vw van to
the fence near the broken down race car, handed the driver the necessary
tools to remove the engine; he did so while the crew removed the engine
from his wife's van and literally handed it over the fence to him. He
carried it to his car , installed it and went on to finish the race. Won
a special award for being the only race driver ever to single handedly
change an engine in the course of a race--try that in your Healey 3000!
