Sure bugs were raced, but not very often or very successfully.  I suspect
the rear suspension was too limiting.
I recall, in SCCA Drivers School, Spring 1965, Wilmot Hills, getting soundly
trounced by a girl (lady?) in a bug (reportedly Porsche Powered).      If
memory serves, a bug has appeared at the runoffs a few times.  >
