I assume you are talking about the fasteners for the hood/bonnet, rather
than the side curtains.  

They do usually need to be shimmed a bit, to get the hood to line up with
the fenders.  Solid (rather than corrugated) cardboard works OK if you give
it a coat of paint to keep it dry.  Or TRF sells reproductions of the
original material (which had a funny pink/orange color to it).
