That is true with the later drain plug.
Which is why I specified "finger-tight"; which shouldn't be enough to crush
the filter screen; but IMO should get the plug past the point where it would
start to crush the gasket if the gasket were in place.
The wire basket filter is actually pretty springy, so I don't think it would
permanently deform even if you did tighten the plug down without a gasket.
But just going finger-tight should ensure no damage; while getting the plug
close enough to
a) Check that it's not hitting something else too soon (like a damaged
thread).
and
b) Check that the gap is even.
