What do you mean "even with silicone"? Do you spray it on the hoses?

Any way, a trick that a VERY old mechanic taught me when I was very young,
is to put some grease around the rim on the inside of the hose before
installing it. It lets the hose slip on easier and then makes the rubber
swell causing a better seal. Of course, the composition of hoses may have
changed since then, which would be around the time my TR3A was new.  Maybe
one of the chemists on the list would like to comment about that? But I have
used this technique in the modern era and it seems to work fine.
