Throw-out, yes, taper pin, no.  When a taper pin breaks it doesn't break
cleanly.  The jagged, irregular ends of the two pieces will continue to
engage each other and the clutch will appear near normal for a while. 
After a little grinding and shifting the two ends will be less and less
cooperative and only after quite some time will the whole thing stop
working altogether.
