Advancing until it would just barely ping (pink) at full throttle and low
engine rpm is the method recommended in the TR2/3 factory manual.  Of
course, this only applies to engines running the stock advance curve, as I
recall the original question was from someone with a very modified (almost
useless IMO) advance curve who was actually asking for a "total advance"
figure, not initial advance.

One other point tho, it may be difficult to hear pinging at speed in an open
car.  My TR3A was apparently pinging at high speed cruise (due to very badly
worn valve guides and a leaking valve seal), I never heard it.  The broken
piston got my attention, the guides have been replaced <g>
