Yeah - I thought that the jumper leads just weren't up to the job so I
am still suspect on the battery.

I have not yet measured what is happening with the alternator at revs
above idle but I used the same one on the previous motor and it worked a
treat.

We relocated the battery to the rear of the car during the rebuild to
get more engine bay space and increase traction over the rear wheels so
I am concerned something dodgy happened to our wiring along the way.

It's just funny how it roars to life instantly when cold - and ticks
over really fast on the starter when it is cold.

I did try to turn the engine by hand when it was hot and didn't really
get very far.

I also tried cranking it when it was hot with the ignition disconnected
and it still struggled to turn over.

Another guy has already responded and said he had to switch to a gear
reduction starter to deal with the higher compression on his performance
motor. He also said that he got interference with the solenoid when hot
so he built a heat shield for the starter.

Glen Johnson.

Glen, I'm thinking you've got several related problems. Does the
alternator voltage come up to 13.5 or higher when you rev the engine up
? If not, you've likely got a duff alternator or possibly a bad battery
(or both). The 12.2 rising to almost 13.0 overnight suggests the
battery, so I'd probably try substituting it first. Jumper leads
frequently will not pass enough current to start a problem engine if the
target battery won't contribute at least a little bit.

Another thing to try is cranking hot with the ignition disconnected,
just to be sure your problem isn't early ignition timing for some
reason.

Also, it's not unusual for starters to work fine cold and not at all
when hot, try icing it down and see if that changes the problem.

Last, can you turn the engine by hand when it's hot ?

Randall
