O/D gearbox. The reason that I ask is that even though my gearbox is
recently rebuilt, I often get some gear crunch when changing back from 4th
to 3rd. I have been advised that this is a common problem with this gearbox
if the oil being used is too thick or the wrong type. Some people have even
suggested that I should be using automatic transmission fluid instead of
gear oil. What are your views/experiences.

Terry, I am running Red Line MTL synthetic transmission lub in my TR6 with
J-type overdrive and although it leaks out a bit faster than I would like
it performes quite well for me. Being a synthetic it has a rather more
constant viscosity than does the dino lub.
I don't know if it is available in your neck of the woods but maybe you can
find another brand of synthetic that will work as well.
