My .02,

You will probably have to heat sink the regulator somehow. Be careful as the
metal tab on a negative voltage regulator is electrically connected to the
input pin. If you mount it directly to a metal surface, it will effectively
short the battery!
When you pick up the regulator at RS, buy a small heatsink and a isolation
kit. The kit is basically a mica disk and a plastic shoulder washer. Follow
the directions on the box. You want to end up with the metal tab of the
regulator isolated from the heatsink. You can check this with any type of
voltmeter before you connect any wires.
The good news is the whole thing should be about $5.00 (US) and take an hour
or so to do.

Radio Shack Adjustable Regulator

For a _negative_ ground system use 276-1778 $ 1.99 ( LM317T is the
industry
# ) This regulates voltage on the _positive_ side of the rail.

For a _positive_ ground system use one that regulates on the _negitive_ side
of the rail. ( Sorry, don't have a PN and RS does not sell a adjustable
one).

The Adjustable v regs use a minimum of 2 external parts, you could add a
capacitor on the input and output to smooth things out. But with a thermal
type gauge they might not be needed. There is a circuit on the back of the
Radio Shack package.

RS also sells fixed voltage regulators. They show a _negitive_ regulator (
use with a _positive_ground car ) that runs at a fixed 10 Volts. No
external
parts are needed, three wires Power in, Ground, Power out. RSU 11513777
