Well, I'd have to say it is the layshaft in the transmission. You probably
pulled a
sick TR6 transmission and put in a similarly sick TR4 unit.
It was worth fixing all that other stuff, but in vain.
Now rebuild the TR6 transmission while you limp along with the TR4 unit, then
exchange.

I have a long running problem with my TR3A that perhaps someone out there
has experience of.
At first the symptoms were a 'chattering' type noise on fourth gear but only
when coasting, not when accelerating or decelerating. I drained the gearbox
oil and was presented with what looked like a spacer. Thinking that the
gearbox was at fault (and wanting to upgrade to overdrive anyway) I replaced
the gearbox (which was TR6) with a TR4 gearbox from a fire damaged car. At
the same time I took the liberty to replace all the clutch components
(spring type).
Upon re-assembly the noise was still there. Since then I have taken the
gearbox out and machined the flywheel. I have replaced the propshaft, the
exhaust, the UJs, had some seals replaced on the diff (and had the pinion
bearing checked) and have replaced the bomb type starter with a long type
(since I found out during all this work that the ring gear was bolt on). I
have had the car looked at by two experts now who both were unable to say
anything but that it was the gearbox. Can I be so unlucky as to get two
gearboxes with the same problem?
I have covered quite some kilometres back and forward to various different
garages and the noise is gradually getting worse. I now get it in third
gear and sometimes in second. I invariably get it when I'm accelerating
also (although not when going uphill ?!). As you can see I have spent a lot
of money on this problem and it's still not fixed. I don't know where to go
next with this. Has anyone else experienced this problem before? Does
anyone have any idea what I should do next? I'd be grateful for your
thoughts!
