This may not be definitive, but I am looking at an original advertisement
that has a front end view and a rear view of a TR3A.  The hinges of the
"toilet seats" are clearly on the top.  I would assume it came from the
factory like that.  That would also seem to make sense in that it would
provide better protection against water and accumulation of dirt.  (same
reason a telephone jack is supposed to be installed with the wires on the
top).  Maybe not ergonomically correct, but then what's important here?
