Hi everyone - I'm a first-time poster but a long-time reader of the digest
version. I've been experiencing a perplexing problem with the charging system
on my recently acquired 1974 TR6. Hoping someone can help.

Beginning at the beginning, no matter what the load or RPM, the alternator
light never goes out but does eventually get to a dimly lit stage after
moderate driving. On the advice of my mechanic (a highly reputable one, by
the way) I replaced the alternator with a rebuilt Lucas unit. After changing
out the alternator, the problem persisted in much the same way as before.
Yesterday, I took the alternator back to the British parts specialist who sold
it to me where he bench tested it and claimed that it's working properly,
putting out 13.7 volts at 4,000 RPM. As I said earlier, I have been reading
these pages for some time and as such, I have seen the benefit to acquiring
Dan Masters' electrical troubleshooting guide. I followed his testing
flowchart but I can't seem to get the answer to spit out. Long story short; I
have 12.2V at the battery, 12.2V at the sensing wire, 12.2V at the battery
terminals while the engine is running (no matter what RPM or load) and 12.2V
at the large brown wire at the Alternator (again, neither RPM or load seems to
have any impact on output). The Alternator connection is a two or three wire
affair (large brown = large spade terminal & +, brown/yellow = small terminal
& alternator light at tach, small brown = sensing wire). Having the sensing
wire either connected or disconnected to its lonely terminal on the lower
portion of the casing also has no effect. Oh yeah, the voltmeter in the dash
never reads above 12V or so either.

Any ideas guys?

Thanks in advance,

Pat Bishop
