This subject comes up perhaps once a year, not so much as a replacement
for, but as an addition to the list. Someone announced they were
starting one a year or so ago; I checked periodically for a week or two,
and couldn't find it, so I suspect it did not materialize.

Most people strenuously object to the notion of a newsgroup, rather than
a mailing list. The list is private, so virtually no spam gets through,
and the spam bots have no chance of harvesting addresses from the list,
so one's spam level doesn't go up by subscription to the list(s). And,
newsgroups being generally available world-wide, yes, there's much more
traffic, but, then, there's a lot more junk to wade through. And, if
you're out of town for several days, frequently, your server may purge
news, and those replies from a few days before may be gone.

Admittedly, the only thing I can see of advantage to a newsgroup is that
one doesn't have to download email, just headers, and there's no storage
problem on one's own drive, if one has the POP3 set up to download all
mail. The disadvantages of a newsgroup seem to outweigh any advantages.

Cheers.
