Lee,

That is the correct mounting. These flywheels are carry overs from the
TR4/5 days when the starter had a different design. Back then the bendix
was behind the flywheel and was pulled into it when the solenoid was
engaged. The teeth on these starters were straight cut. With the TR6, the
bendix is pushed into the flywheel by the solenoid and the bendix gears are
tapered.

Hope this clears it up for you.

Any opinions on which direction the ring gear should be mounted for a TR6?
There are two possible answers:
 - beveled gear side toward starter or
 - beveled gear side away from starter.
I have two ring gears (1971 and 1974) they are both mounted beveled gear
side away from starter.
Thanks much for the answers!
