I agree with you on why the was originally ring gear is mounted the way it
was. However, eight years ago when I installed a new ring gear on my '74 TR6 I
mounted the new one (after talking with TRF's technical rep) with the beveled
side towards the starter. I haven't had any problems with it. By the way, the
ring gear is very easy to install after first heating it up in an oven.
