Hi Dave,

This does work.....I have done it several times on the BMW PI systems.

Hook up an electric fuel pump at the throttle body, fuel rail, whatever
at the front of the system....pump fuel backwards to the tank, voila! 
The pump is primed!  It has worked every time for me.
