This is a similar process to the Prestone fill and flush kit I use.  I
have a short length of hose with a T and an one way valve that I
insert into the system next to the heater valve (you could leave it in
permanently).  There is also a diverter that is inserted into the
radiator fill opening.  I have a 4' section of garden hose stuffed in
the diverter to collect the first bit of coolant for disposal and
direct all the flush water outside the car.

I've done it several times without incident.  I run a cleaning
compound for a few miles before flushing.  It made very brown water
the first time.

The kits are only a couple bucks at a local parts store.
