Moon Guides' "Road Trip USA (Cross-Country Adventure on America's
Two-Lane Highways)" details (785 pages) drives on 11 of the old federal
highways. Included, of course, is "The Mother Road" Route 66.

It describes the route and sights from the corner of Santa Monica and
Ocean Blvds to Chicago. It's an on-again off-again situation so some
sort of guide is helpful if you don't want to encounter those "Pavement
Ends" signs.

There is another book, perhaps called "The Mother Road" but as I recall
that was more historical and pictorial than a current driving guide.
