Didn't see any direct answer to Malcolm's question, so here goes.

Yes. Mark the pulley! Get the crankshaft to TDC and mark the pulley with
a spot of white paint where it lines up with the indicator on the timing
cover.

To find TDC without major work:

Pull plug #1. Look in through the opening while somebody turns the
engine by hand (so you might want to pull all 4 plugs). If you can rig
up a way of turning the engine yourself while watching the piston, you
can line up TDC very accurately.

Anther possible indication of TDC is the Woodruff key slot in the
crankshaft (it should align with rod journals 1 & 4), but to see that
you'll have to do some additional disassembly.

With #1 at TDC, examine the crankshaft pulley carefully in the area
under the pointer on the timing cover. The 1147 Herald pulley has a
dimple there. Bet yours does too!

Anyway, once you have the engine at TDC it's just a matter of marking
the pulley. I advise marking +/- 10 degrees, not just TDC. Might be a
good idea to use different colors.
