Take the following with a grain of salt, I sold my last triumph in 91 so my
memory is not perfect...

Sounds like your starter solenoid to me. The little cylinder that sits
above your starter motor has a high amp switch in it, the contacts get
burned and it pulls in but doesn't pass enough current to the starter to
turn it. It's easy to disassemble and clean the contacts with sandpaper but
some including the lucas as I recall need you to unsolder a few wires to
get the cap off.

I put a cap kit through one of my cars, maybe a range rover, cost about $35
aus which is probably about $20US.
