Peter-
I have a '75 Spit with the same carb.
I was able to adjust the carb "in situ" by removing the float bowl, and
carefully pushing upwards on the float until it just closed the valve. Be
careful not to press too hard or you will get erroneous readings. This has
worked for me in the past. My current car is set up this way, and I have never
had a problem since.
