On the forward side of the carburetor, just above the temp compensator,
there is a screw on a spring called the "trim screw" in Bentley's. Its
use/setting is never addressed. Can anyone describe its function and method
for setting?

You need a long allen wrench. Can't recall the size, probably 3/16". Once
you have the piston out of the carb (remove the carb cover, remove the
spring, now you can just pull out the piston - air valve as you call it -
careful to not damage the needle at the bottom of the piston). Insert the
allen wrench into the hole at the top of the piston and turn
counter-clockwise. You will observe the needle getting longer at the bottom
of the piston. Keep turning the allen wrench until the needle no longer
moves down. Now get a small flat blade screw driver and loosen the grub
screw which goes into the side of the piston (look in a parts catalog for a
picture). Once the grub screw is out just pull gently on the needle. It
should come free.
FWIW, you can get a special tool to help do the job (actually to adjust the
mixture needle in-situ on the carb without damaging the diaphragm) which has
the correct size allen wrench. All the usual british dealers should have it,
around $10US. Well worth it - an allen wrench will cost $2-3 anywise. With
this tool you can safely adjust the mixture without removing the carb cover
for each adjustment.
