The compression ring confusion you have noticed is repeated in the
Haynes manual. .010 to .015 for TR4 and .003 to .010 for TR3. They are
obvious and dangerous misprints. .003 is not nearly enough gap for a 3 inch
bore engine and probably will cause a seizure. .030 is too wide and will
loose compression. A good rule of thumb for compression ring gap is
.003-.004 per inch of bore.
