You may know this already, but here goes. 

In the UK, the "tail" lights the red ones, go on all the
time the side/main lights are on.  They must be on all the
time by law, and can never go off.  When you turn they still
have to be on.  So you have ambere indicator lights, which 
flash like in conjunction with the front lights, and the
side indicator lights.  The amber lights are never on unless
you have your hazard warning lights flashing, or you are 
indicating.  

So there are no amber UK side marker lights, these are i
indecators the red lights are the side markers.
 
I think in the US you flash the red lights, to indicate
a direction turn.  Just watch two films to remind you 
of thin, one a British film with cars, two the same
but American. 

Hope that's a clear, and the highest grate mud money can
buy.
