GT6, ATDC, Idiot with a (Timing) Gun

I have a confession to make. This one kind of hurts.

First, to all those who offered advice on my wheezy GT6 recently, thanks
a lot. There are too many of you to count, but please know I appreciate
your help immensely.

As it turns out, when I went investigating a slight miss in my engine,
my "therapy" made the problem worse.

You see, I thought that ATDC in a clockwise spinning engine occurred
after the indicator, not before. (Charlie Brown tried to explain this
one to me, but I still don't get it ...) So in my zeal, I reset the
timing to 4 degrees BTDC, as it turns out, and that's why the car just
wouldn't sit up straight. (Imagine that ..) Now that I've put the
timing BACK WHERE IT WAS, everything is fine, which also means that
something else I did while investigating the original problem actually
cured it. (Gee ... was it the new fuel filter? Condensor? Points?
We'll NEVER know.)

During the middle of all this, I sent people chasing down timing chain
slips, wiped cam lobes, torn carb diaphragms, you name it. Oh well --
think of it as a fun diagnostic exercise. To (sort of) quote a line in
"Animal House" -- "Face it. You screwed up. You trusted me."

PS: Who can explain this ATDC/BTDC thing to me in a way my small mind
can grasp?

It's a good thing I'm not your surgeon.

Anyway, peace has returned to the valley. And
