Valve cover venting

In the discussions on the purpose and theory of valve cover and
crankcase venting I have failed to see mentioned the primary purpose of
of the hose prior to all that emission malarky:  When secured properly
just below and toward the rear of the engine it was a most efficient
anti-rust dispencer.  Mine has been so fixed for 24 years on the 6 and
in well over 200,000 miles not a spot of rust has appeared.
