Subject: Mind Boggling problem on an '80 spit...

I am in the midst of restoring an 80 spit, and have come to a very
confusing problem that seems to reside in the rear differential. The
vehicle mentioned above is up on stands in my garage. The symptoms that I
have been experiencing are:
1: When I rotate the rear Passenger side tire forward or reverse, the
opposite tire goes in the opposite direction (i.e. one goes
forward while the other goes into reverse).
2: There is complete free play with the tires, whether or not the
        transmission is engaged in gear.
3: When the tires are being turned, the driveshaft doesn't have any
        motion at all.
4: I can tell that the two propeller shafts that come out from the
differential to the wheels are in deed rotating.

The combination of all this information leads me to think that the problem
resided in the differential. I would appreciate any help narrowing down
this seemingly strange problem. Any information is appreciated, and
thanks in advance for your assistance.
