There is another way of separating a tapered ball joint from its mate.
It does not require heat, it doesn't require the pickle fork, it doesn't
damage rubber boots.

It takes only two large hammers. Basically, you strike the part that has
the hole in it, at right angles to the hole. For example, to separate
the tie rod end from the steering arm, you place one big hammer in back
of the steering arm part and strike the opposite side of the steering
arm with the other hammer.

This distorts the part with the taper in it a microscopic amount, which
is corrected when you put in the new part. I've done lots of thes and it
has never taken more than three blows. It works!!!!!
