John,

I'll give you my best guesses

What is the Manufacturer name of this unit? That would probably help determine.
What wires are coming off of it now??

>>1. In the wiring harness that goes across the top of the firewall, I
   >>have a green wire /w a black strip on it and a spade lug. It comes

   >>solenoid. Where is it supposed to attach to, and what is it for?

This could be headed toward your trans...do you have overdrive? If not,
this may just be an extra feed designed for that purpose. Do your reverse
lights function? Could be your supply source for that circuit if not.

>>2. In the same bundle as above, I have a black wire with a spade lug
   >>on it. It appears to be a ground. Where is it supposed to attach
   >>to, and what is it for?

This and the purple/black could be for the horn circuit..Are your horns
functioning?
Are they stock? If not, this could be your source for that circuit.

>>3. In the same bundle as above, I have a black wire /w purple stripe
   >>that comes out of the harness by the coil. This wire has a 2 pin
   >>connector connected to it. I can't find what it attaches to.
   >>Where is it supposed to attach to, and what is it for?

>>4. This eng. has a single carb. on it. According to my manuals, it
   >>should be a stromberg of some type. However, on the carb. all I
   >>see as far as an identification is Zenith CD. What type carb.
   >>is it?

Zenith CD IS a Stromberg...you are OK there

>>5. It appears that there are only 2 nuts attaching the carb. to the
   >>manifold. One on the lower left and the other on the upper right.
   >>How the H$%# do you get the nut on the upper right off? I can't

   >>drive socket with a universal in there. I'm stumped.

Perseverence, young man. They never said it would be easy. This will
apply to the fuel pump bolt as well. You will get them off, just be slow
and careful (as though you have a choice)

I will forward this to the list for further comment as well. The true
electrical guys will have more insight...probably grounded in much
more reality than my WAG's
