Mark Grafsrtom asked about engune numbers and front engine plates.

Generally the engine number should be similar but higher than the commision
number. This was caused by Triumph selling engines to Morgan and other car
builders. Also engines were pulled off the production line for warranty
repairs.

The front engine plate on a TR3 motor is shorter than the one for a TR4. I
have a friend that has a TR4 motor in his TR3 using the TR4 front plate.
This causes the front of the engine to sit about 1 inch higher than it
should. This causes problems with the radiator hoses, clearance problems
between the harmonic damper and the frame cross member and also causes a low
oil indication on the dip stick when the engine has the correct amount of oil
in the pan. It also looks funny.

I wouild suggest that you find the correct front plate as you will chid
yourself everytime you open the bonnet otherwise.
