What Barry Schwartz said about the cam lifters is entirely correct.
However, if you are using your old cam, and keep the old lifters,
you should use the same lifter on the same cam lobe without exception.

The two pieces wear together. They become mates, and should live
together for their lives. Here's the scoop:

new cam = new lifters (no exceptions)
old cam = old lifters (same lobe, same lifter, no pits on either cam
                       or lifter)
old cam = new lifters (if cam is ok, no pits and lifters are pitted)

As Barry already stated, ANY pits whatsoever means time for a new
surface.
