A coupla things you might try before you pull the starter.

Sounds like the inactivity might have got to it and the starter gear is not
engaging the flywheel due to crud in the starter.  Try rapping the body of
the starter with a hammer
to loosen it up and test again with a charged battery, probably a good idea
to disconnect and clean the starter connections too.

If this works, it may be enough to keep it working, but if the problem
persists you'll
have to pull and clean the starter.  Definitely a job you could do, i
wouldn't take it in.
