There are two things to keep in mind here. The first is that we have become
accustomed to the fit of panels on new cars. Production tolerances these
days are much tighter than 30+ years ago, so what appears to be a large gap
between panels is normal for the car. I was alarmed at the fit of the new
panels on my TR6; the gaps were huge, but the fellow had done an excellent
job aligning them so that everything was uniform. The second point is that
over time, parts and panels move, and considering how flexible (literally)
the cars are, it is no surprise that gaps will change. The idea of
comparing the sides to inspect for crash damage is a good one.
