I think you can kiss that nice tan or gray exhaust pipe color goodby!  That
coating was the lead deposits that formed on the pipes, and with the advent
of mandatory unleaded fuel that mixture indicator was eliminated.  My
exhaust pipe used to be a lovely light tan when I was using leaded fuel and
when that became unavailable my exhaust turned to nasty black.  While on the
same thread, has anybody noticed that they are having to clean their
windscreens and the front of their cars more than they used to.  It seems
that in the last four or five years I have been having to clean drops of
some kind of oily spots, from what appears to be the exhaust of other cars (
I travel on a busy freeway every day and I realize that my Spitfire is lower
than most cars ).  I don't remember having to clean my car off this often
before!  It's a real nuisance, and probably a tribute to the reformulated
crap losely called gasoline these days. . .sorry, I'll step down from the
soapbox now. . .
