The problem: once warm, there seems to be an intermittent sputtering/
misfire at mid-range under slight load, i.e., 2000-3000 rpm and about
1/4 to 1/3 throttle will produce some sputtering.

Andrew,
I read some messages about two month ago, made me think about a similar problem
I have *sometime* on my Spitfire MK3. (to be honest, perceptible only on long
trips, when normally hot, at normal cruising speed, 4thOVD, 3500rpm) But power
is here at high rev. They said it could be a fuel level problem in the float
chamber... Did you ever checked the float height ? (I did not yet...)
