Subject: Aluminum in TR4A head?

Hey all,

In my highly successful quest to blow stupid amounts of money on my TR4A
restoration, my cylinder head went in to the machinists today for a reface. I
admonished him to NOT hot-tank the head, after hearing many horror stories from
the group regarding the aluminum push-rod tubes dissolving away to nothing in a
matter of hours.

My machinist just called me to say that he had checked the push-rod tubes with a
magnet, and that the magnet stuck. He insists that they are steel. He's
getting ready to throw the head into the hot tank tommorrow.

Needless to say, this is giving me the willies. Who amongst you has had
experience with this issue? Is it possible that a PO replaced my push-rod tubes
with steel versions? Is there some sort of wierd aluminum alloy that I've never
heard of that is magnetic? Were different years/models made with steel vs.
aluminum push-rod tubes? Am I going to be searching for a new cylinder head on
Thursday?

If anybody has some insight on this issue, it would be greatly appreciated.
Please respond quickly, however, as my head is descending into the cauldron of
doom...

Thanks,
David Rupert
