Hold it, don't put that puppy back together without that wayward piece of
steel in the
middle of your diff.
>From the sound of it, you have one of the much coveted factory comp style
detroit lockers. That thrust button has got to be there, and yes, the PO just
stuck it in there loose, 'cause that's the way its supposed to go in. The
thrust button must be there to set the end float of the rear axles. Without
it, the tapered bearings would be allowed to float all over the place, or be
so tight that they would sieze. Put the button back in, and yes, all that
holds it in is the axles themselves, then set the axle end float to the
factory specs using the shims at the end of the axle tubes as normal. You are
also correct in noting that in an IRS car the button is not needed as there
is no end float to set on the drive flanges of the IRS setup.
